Anne Waiguru Whisked Away as Police Fire Gunshots in Her Kirinyaga Rally

Kirinyaga County Gubernatorial Candidate Anne Waiguru was on Tuesday evening whisked to safety after suspected goons invaded her rally in Ndia.

Trouble began after the former Cabinet Secretary concluded her speech and a group of men alleged to be supporters of her rival, Martha Karua stormed the rally.

The rowdy group started shouting that Waiguru was not welcomed in the area perceived to be Karua's stronghold, plunging the rival groups into a fierce fight.

Ms Waiguru's security team swung into action and swiftly moved the former CS to safety as police fired in the air to disperse the rowdy youth and contain the situation.

The goons are also reported to have stoned one of Waiguru's campaign cars after which they disappeared with the keys.

One person, Mr Moses Waweru, was injured and rushed to a medical facility in the nearby Embu County.

Calm was restored later on after more police reinforcement was deployed to the area.

Waiguru and Karua are yet to issue official statements regarding the incident.

The Kirinyaga gubernatorial contest is one of the heated races as both Waiguru and Karua command sizeable support from the electorate and have backing from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
