Opposition Leader Raila Odinga and his family have dismissed claims that Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya, an NGO linked to their daughter Rosemary Odinga, has been accepting foreign funds for political activities.
In a statement from their spokesman Dennis Onyango, the family noted that the allegations against Rosemary were aimed at tarnishing her name and fighting her political career.
The family noted that the NGO coordination board was not being realistic about their allegations as Rosemary's organization was yet to be registered.
"Fazul Mahamed should be ashamed of himself. He knows that Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya was never registered unless he did it on our backs for purposes of character assassination," the statement read in part.
The Odingas further noted that Rosemary's NGO had applied for registration and submitted all the requirements in addition to paying the registration fee, but was yet to be issued with a registration certificate and as such there was no way the organization would receive any monies.
"Without a certificate of registration, there is no way it could open a bank account and receive the monies alleged. We challenge Mr Mahamed to share with Kenyans the actual account numbers he wants frozen," the family stated.
"Raila is winning this election and Jubilee is running scared. We look forward to the end of this shameless desperation in five days time. We appeal to those at war with Raila Odinga to face him directly and spare his children," Onyango added.
The NGO Coordination board on Tuesday ordered the freezing of accounts belonging to an NGO associated with Rosemary for allegedly operating "illegal" bank accounts.
In a letter addressed to CBK Governor Dr Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, Executive Director Fazul Mahamed noted that the NGO, Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya, had received Sh530 Million from George Soros Foundation.
The NGOs watchdog argued that Rosemary’s Foundation had breached the NGOs Coordination Act 1990, the NGOs Coordination Regulations 1992 as well as Terms and Conditions attached to the certificate of registration.
"The aid agency that has funded the foundation is associated with subterfuge political activities globally and nefarious regime change tactics," Mahamed noted.
It was also alleged that the Rosemary-linked NGO had not complied in matters pertaining to opening and operating bank accounts.
