NGO Board Freezes Bank Accounts of Rosemary Odinga

The NGO Coordination board has ordered the freezing of accounts belonging to an NGO associated with Opposition leader Raila Odinga's daughter, Rosemary Odinga for operating "illegal" bank accounts.

In a letter addressed to CBK Governor, Dr. Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, Executive Director Fazul Mahamed noted that the NGO, Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya, had received Sh530 Million from George Soros Foundation.

The NGOs watchdog argues that Rosemary’s Foundation has breached the NGOs Co-ordination Act 1990, the NGOs Co-ordination Regulations 1992 as well as Terms and Conditions attached to the certificate of registration.

"The aid agency that has funded the foundation is associated with subterfuge political activities globally and nefarious regime change tactics," said Mr Mahamed.

It was also alleged that the Rosemary-linked NGO has not complied in matters pertaining to opening and operating bank accounts.

The NGO Board added that the Foundation has opened and is operating several illegal unauthorized bank accounts contrary to Section 12 (4) of the NGOs Co-ordination Act.

The Board believes that the funds were meant to fund campaigns for National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

The statement further claims that the chairperson of Key Empowerment Foundation Ms. Jacqueline Achayo, to which Ms. Rosemary is the Trustee, was approached over the matter but she said that she does not call the shots in terms of financial affairs and transactions.
