Governors who Misused Funds and Have Been Voted Out

A number of incumbent governors have been shown the door in the just concluded General Election and some of them had been involved in scandals that angered the public during their respective tenures.

Incumbent Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka is set to lose his seat to Francis Kimemia who has garnered 219,083votes compared to his 12,713 votes.

In 2016, the Nyandarua Governor was accused of purchasing a Christmas tree at a cost of KSh 2 million. 

The incident caused an uproar in his county after several photos were shared online.

Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka is also trailing his counterpart Wycliffe Wafula who has 194,665 votes (48.24%) compared to Lusaka's 173,276 votes (42.94%).

Lusaka was once put on the spot after he approved the purchasing of 10 wheelbarrows hailed as "noncarcinogenic" for Sh1.09 Million

Uproar by residents and investigations followed, leading to charges against eight county workers.

In Meru, Jubilee Party's Kiraitu Murungi is all but certain to clinch the governorship seat after getting 271,065 votes (52.29%) compared to incumbent Peter Munya's 221,256 votes (42.68%).

Munya was once implicated in a scandal for allegedly procuring hospital curtains worth Sh7.8 Million for the County's General Hospital.

In 2015, Kirinyaga County allegedly spent Sh1.2 Million on opening a Facebook account. Governor Joseph Ndathi allegedly spent Ksh 1.2 million on a contractor to open a County Facebook page.

The County Government, however, defended itself saying that they had contracted services of managing social media as per the regulations provided in the Public Procurement Act.

Ndathi is set to lose his seat to Anne Waiguru who has so far garnered 157,608 votes (54.18%) compared to his 4,582 votes (1.58%).

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto is also set to lose to Joyce Laboso who has 175,932 votes (67.2%) compared to his 85,863 votes (32.8%).

During his tenure, Ruto got a lot of stick on social media for using his county's funds to renovate and launch a cattle dip.

In Laikipia, Governor Joshua Irungu was bashed for his controversial purchase of four sniffer dogs for Sh720,000.

Irungu defended the purchase of the dogs, saying they will help in policing.

Latest results from his county indicate that he is trailing his main rival, independent candidate Ndiritu Murithi with around 20,000 votes.
