Banners Congratulating President Uhuru Kenyatta Burnt Down in Kisumu

Kisumu residents on Wednesday burnt banners congratulating President Uhuru Kenyatta on his win in the August General Election.

Reports indicate the banners were to be erected near the Jubilee market along Kisumu-Nairobi road.

The protesters chanted anti-Uhuru slogans saying they would not allow such banners to be put up in the county.

Two workers who were putting up the banners were forced to take refuge at the top of the structure until police came to their rescue.

"Hatutaki madharau! Hatutaki madharau (We don't want contempt)," the residents shouted.

"We are still mourning. Uhuru should give us a break. Let him not disturb our peace," another resident expressed.

Police officers deployed at the scene lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters.

One of the residents argued that the presidential election results dispute was being handled by the Supreme Court, adding that it was not logical to put up such banners before the case was determined.

Last week, NASA filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging results of the Presidential election which they claimed was rigged in favour of President Kenyatta.

The Opposition alleges that the IEBC engaged in various malpractices that saw former Prime Minister Raila Odinga denied victory.
