ODM Distances Itself From MPs Demanding Salary Hike

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has distanced itself from some incoming Members of Parliament who have been on the spot for demanding higher salaries.

The party issued a statement on Thursday saying the position taken by those members did not represent the position of the party.

"Our attention is drawn to a statement by some incoming Members of the National Assembly regarding proposals for the rationalization of remuneration of Members of Parliament as recommended by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

"Among those behind the statement were members of our Party.

"The Orange Democratic Movement wishes to categorically state that the position taken by those members do not represent our position as a Party nor that of the National Super Alliance of which we are affiliated," read part of the statement signed by ODM Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen.

It further clarified that the party stood for equity and prudent management of public resources.

"We cannot therefore promote or be seen to promote wastage, avarice and inequities in the Kenyan society," Ong'wen stated.

The statement added that members of the party holding public positions were being encouraged to "mediate their personal interests with public good that constitutes the substructure of ODM ideology of Social Democracy."

The ODM statement came shortly after President Uhuru Kenyatta strongly criticised a push by a section of the MPs to increase their salaries once they are sworn in.

Addressing head teachers at the Catholic University on Thursday, Kenyatta affirmed that he was fully behind a decision by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to slash salaries to curb the country's wage bill.

“I fully support the recommendation of SRC that has cut the salaries of public servants from the President all the way down,” he stated.

He also urged members of the opposition to adopt the same stand in a bid to ensure there was no greed or selfish personal interest by legislators.
