CJ David Maraga Gives New Promise Over NASA Presidential Petition

Chief Justice David Maraga has announced that the Supreme Court judges will sit throughout the weekend and even during the night to conclusively deal with the Presidential petition.

Speaking at his home during an interview with KTN News, the CJ noted that he, together with other judges, were going through all the submissions presented by the petitioner and the respondents.

He added that the proceedings would go on until later hours of the night including on Sunday starting with the pre-trial conference scheduled for Saturday 7 pm.

“The period is very short and the amount to be covered is enormous. We are putting in as much as we can in order to prepare for the hearing.” CJ Maraga stated.

The CJ stated that he had received the responses from Jubilee and IEBC lawyers with some reaching him past midnight.

Meanwhile, preparations for the conference continues as Judiciary officers set up various tents where the legal teams and the media will be following the proceedings.

A heavy contingent of police officers has also be deployed in and around the Court to prevent any interruptions to the proceedings which are expected to continue until Friday.

To this effect, several roads have been blocked to motorists and pedestrians including sections of Wabera Street, City Hall Way and Taifa Road.

On Friday, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and Attorney General Githu Muigai made applications to participate in the petition as friends of the Court.

LSK President Isaac Okero said they had significant expertise on constitutional and electoral laws which were relevant to the petition adding that the petition was of public interest.

"We will address fundamental doctrines of representative governance and assist in the interpretation and application of relevant constitutional principles used in Kenya jurisprudence and cooperative foreign law," Okero stated.

In his application, the AG stated that he would assist the court in reaching a just decision.
