Kenyan MPs to Submit CVs Before their Swearing In

Member of Parliament (MPs) elected in the recent elections are now required to submit their CVs ahead of the swearing in ceremony on Thursday, August 31.

The legislators are expected to present the CVs to Parliament clerks in a move aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability to the public.

This step will make sure that the lawmakers' details and academic qualifications are stored in a database where the public can access.

"As part of accountability to the public, their bio data will be captured on the day of orientation and will be posted on the website so that no one will have issues knowing our leaders,” National Assembly Clerk Michael Sialai stated.

This proposal had been made in May but the MPs agreed to suspend the requirement until after the August 8 General Election.

The postponement was made in favour of all MPs who did not have degrees at the time.

Besides the CVs, the lawmakers are expected to submit their national IDs and a certificate from a returning officer that declared them the winner.

In the past, MPs were only required to present their details to the Parliamentary Service Commission's human resource department.

Before their inauguration on Thursday, the legislators will also have to go through orientation on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, immediate former speaker Ekwee Ethuro, Farah Maalim, James Gesami, Kenneth Lusaka, Ribathi Paul, Ramesh Gorassia and  Wilfred Machage have been nominated for the Senate speaker's seat

Noah Awinja, Justin Muturi, and Washington Onyango are the nominees for Speaker of the National Assembly race.
