Nominated Member of Parliament Wilson Sossion is facing trouble after the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials in Kirinyaga threatened to take legal action against him if he does not resign from the position he assumed on Thursday.
Outgoing Kirinyaga KNUT branch Secretary General Harrison Muriithi Gichira stated that Sossion could not be trusted to effectively lobby for the betterment of the Kenyan teachers.
He argued that Nominated MPs had many responsibilities and could not balance them effectively.
Gichira accused Sossion of dishonesty noting that the KNUT Secretary General had promised to resign because "the teachers did not want him to leave".
The union officials now want Sossion to resign from the union or face legal action.
The threat comes even as the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli requested nominated trade unionists not to turn down their places in Parliament.
“We ask the two unions not to fall prey to some external forces, interests, and pressures to either relieve these elected union officials of their positions or be coerced into calling for their resignation because as workers we are no doubt set to benefit greatly,” Atwoli stated.
The KNUT boss took his oath of office on Thursday where he officially became a Nominated MP representing workers.
Sossion's decision to be sworn in surprised many since he had earlier on declined the nomination to focus on commitments to KNUT.
He had asked ODM to consider someone else for the position in the party nomination list.
