7 Moi Girls High School Students Die in Dormitory Fire

Seven students have lost their lives after they suffered severe injuries following a dormitory fire at Moi Girls School in Nairobi.

The fire incident is reported to have occurred on Friday night between 2 am and 3 am.

The cause of the fire is, however, still unknown. The school is taking a tally of the students to ascertain the actual number of casualties.

According to one of the teachers at the school, the affected dormitory had been occupied by Form One students.

Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i who arrived at the scene stated that 10 students had been hospitalised.

"The school will remain closed for the next two weeks to allow the students to recover from the shock of the incident," Matiang'i divulged.

Matiang'i further expressed condolences on behalf of  President Uhuru Kenyatta adding that he has ordered security teams not to leave the school until they got to the bottom of the matter.

The CS asked Kenyans to avoid speculations on what caused the inferno and wait for investigations to be completed.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who also arrived at the scene noted that he would conduct an inspection of other private and public schools in Nairobi to ensure that the dormitories had enough fire exits.

Elsewhere a fire incident was reported at the Sigoti Girls Secondary School in Nyakach area in Kisumu County.

The fire started at 8 am and is said to have destroyed a dormitory occupied by form two students.

No casualties were reported in the incident, however, the students lost their property.

The school's Deputy Principal announced that the school will be closed down today to allow the students to get over the trauma.

In Makueni property worth millions was destroyed in Vitale HGM Primary School following a fire outbreak that burned down a boys' dormitory.

According to area Police Commander Samuel Waweru, the early morning incident left no injuries as the inferno hit the school while students were attending their morning preps.
