Law Society of Kenya, East Africa Law Society and COTU Warn President Uhuru Kenyatta After His Threats Against Supreme Court

President Uhuru Kenyatta is facing fresh criticism from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), East Africa Law Society (EALS) and the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) after his threats against the Supreme Court.

LSK President Isaac Okero demanded respect from Mr Kenyatta, saying the Head of State should avoid issuing such threats against the judiciary.

"All the judges acted professionally and that is a position that must be respected.

"To attack judges and name-call them is undermining the judiciary and threatening the state," stated Okero on Monday during a TV interview.

In Tanzania, EALS Chief Executive Officer Hanningtone Amol echoed similar comments saying Kenyatta crossed boundaries when he attacked the Judiciary.

"He crossed the boundaries of fair criticism and ventured into personal attacks on the judges.

"If not contained, the continued criticism by the agitated Head of State may erode public confidence in the judicial system," he remarked.

COTU boss Francis Atwoli on Sunday also warned the President that his remarks after the Supreme Court's decision to annul his election victory will divide the country.

"I am appealing to His Excellency the President to be a little bit sober.

"He should be himself, stated Atwoli, adding that it was wrong for the Head of State to call the judges crooks.

He also faulted the President and his deputy William Ruto for immediately embarking on campaigns saying he should have sat down to plan well first.

"If I were President Kenyatta today I would still be thinking what to do. You do not just hit the road immediately and start politicking, you will make a lot of mistakes and even people who voted for you will change their mind," he stated.

Atwoli further appealed to the President not to be emotional or irrational saying he has no moral authority to lash out at the judges if he earlier appealed to Kenyans to accept results.

"Mr Kenyatta, Mr Ruto and Garissa Town MP Aden Duale had asked NASA leader Raila Odinga and his team to go to court and they did so.

They argued their case well and won so we do not expect those insults. Jubilee had their lawyers at the court too," he stated.
