IEBC Sets New Date for Presidential Election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the date for the fresh presidential election ordered by the Supreme Court.

Following a meeting held on Monday, the electoral body stated that Kenyans would be back to the polls on Tuesday, October 17.

Through a statement issued by Chairman Wafula Chebukati, the electoral commission added that only President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga would be on the ballot paper.

Chebukati noted that IEBC was revising the operational and procedural requirements for the conduct of a fresh election.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i had urged the IEBC to conduct the election before October 17 to allow enough time for candidates to prepare for the KCSE exams.

Matiang'i asked the electoral body to consider the students given that some of the schools would be used as polling stations and tallying centres.

On Friday, the Court nullified President Kenyatta's win after a successful petition filed by the National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders.

Reading the ruling, Chief Justice David Maraga ordered the electoral body to conduct a fresh election within 60 days which would be any date before November 1.

Earlier on, there was a confusion over who would participate in the repeat exercise since the Court did not issue any directive.

Thirdway Alliance candidate Ekuru Aukot has already vowed to challenge in court the exclusion of the other leaders who were on the ballot on August 8.
