President Uhuru Issues Statement After Raila Rejected New Election Dates

President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a new statement after Opposition Leader Raila Odinga proposed for the postponement of the elections.

Speaking at State House, President Kenyatta criticised Raila’s move to oppose the date set by the IEBC for the repeat Presidential election citing lack of “consultation”.

“There is no legal requirement that Raila be consulted. I was neither consulted, Kenya doesn’t belong to one man,” said the President.

Addressing the media at Parliament Buildings, Jubilee legislators led by Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen and Murang'a County Woman Representative Sabina Chege also condemned calls by Mr Odinga for the postponement of the elections.

Senator Murkomen noted that there was no legal requirement for the opposition to be on the ballot hence they should not give conditions.

"Let them boycott and Uhuru Kenyatta will be sworn in as the next president. It will be an easy job for us," Mr Murkomen stated.

The Woman Rep on her part expressed the party's concern with the ODM leaders remarks that the upcoming National exams (KCPE & KCSE) should be postponed in favour of the elections.

"We as Jubilee are deeply concerned with comments of the Opposition Leader this morning where he commented and said that exams can be moved for 2 weeks and if they are moved for the said period our children cannot die," she stated.

Ms Chege noted that a delay in exams would cause psychological torture among students adding that parents would also have to incur most costs for the extra time their kids stay in school.

"We kindly ask Mr Odinga to refrain from politicking about education, he also needs to tell us what he knows about the arsons happening in schools.

"He should also tell us whether he will die if we do examinations two weeks before the election," she stated.

Earlier on, Mr Odinga had announced that he would like the repeat presidential election to be held on either October 24 or October 31.

He maintained that the October 17 date given by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was not consultative.

"The exam can be pushed by two weeks, they (the students) won't die. There is no reason why you can't delay the exams. They are not more important than the election of the president of Kenya, " he stated.
