More Details on Fire That Broke Out in St. Georges High School on Saturday Night

New Details have emerged about a fire that broke out in Nairobi's St. Georges High School barely a week after nine girls lost their lives a fire in Moi Girls' High school. 

The inferno that occurred on Saturday night is reported to have started in the kitchen area when the children were asleep in the dormitory.

Firefighters from the Nairobi City Council emergency department responded to the alarm promptly and managed to put it out about an hour after it broke out.

Confirming the incident, National Disaster Management Unit, Deputy Director Mwachi Pius Masai stated there were no casualties and thanked all those who provided assistance during the incident. 

“So far, no injuries and the cause of fire not known. Emergency Responders including the Nairobi City County Fire Fighters are fighting it and it is under control,” he stated.

The Agency added that students were being counselled following a Saturday night fire as parents were allowed to check on their students to confirm they were all safe.

"The 12 students who had panicked have been checked and found that they are safe and they are back at the school.

"This was confirmed by a multi-agency meeting that was chaired by Education Principal Secretary (Belio Kipsang) at the school," Mr Masai stated.

He urged the police and the county fire department to conduct speedy investigations to get to the cause of the fire.

On Wednesday, Senior Principal Magistrate Theresa Nyangena ordered the student who was suspected of starting a fire that killed 9 students at Moi Girls School, Nairobi be remanded for 7 days to allow police conclude investigations.

The Magistrate ruled that “The suspect in great danger not just to the public but even to herself hence keeping her in custody will save her from hurting herself."

The prosecution submitted that the girl is being probed for murder, arson and other deliberate acts of crime.
