Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has provided two explanations for the ongoing water rationing in several estates despite the current heavy rainfall.

In a statement released on Sunday, while identifying 11 more affected estates, the company disclosed that only four water sources are serving the city.

These sources, namely Kikuyu Springs, Ruiru, Sasumua, and Thika Dams, collectively have an installed maximum daily production capacity of 440 million, 61 million, 20 million, and 4 million litres respectively.

This brings the total maximum daily production capacity to 525.6 million litres per day, which falls significantly short of the city's daily consumption of 900 million litres.

"Our water supply to the City is therefore limited to the installed production capacity. This means that even when we have our dams overflowing, the water supply will remain constant. We cannot go beyond the installed production capacity," read the statement in part.

"In view of this, we have to continue rationing water in Nairobi despite the heavy rainfall. This is done through our Equitable Water Distribution Program whose purpose is to enable each customer
receive water at least once a week."

The water supply city-wide has also been affected by the flooding situation washing away water supply pipelines therefore leaving some estates receiving water with a lower pressure.

The affected areas include Fedha 1 Estate, Infinity Estate on Kagundo Road, Tumaini Estate, The Whole of Tassia, Avenue Park 1 & 2 Estates, Nyayo Embakasi Estate, Kware Road area, Kwa Ndege, Lower Plot 10, Lexo and surrounding areas.

Others are Ngomongo, Korogocho, Matopeni-Kayole, Brookside Grove Westlands, Wangapala and Iregi Roads - Parklands Cotton Road and Dennis Pritt Road Kilimani, Chieko in Kasarani, Kamiti Road near Jacaranda, Kahawa Barraks and Kenyatta University.

Last Thursday, the same company issued a warning that water supply to 10 Nairobi estates would be affected.

In a notice, the company clarified that the water supply pipeline along Outer Ring Road was washed away on Wednesday at the Ngong River Crossing due to the floods currently being experienced in the country.

The ten affected Nairobi estates include Fedha Estate, Tassia, Nyayo Embakasi Estate, Embakasi Village, Avenue Park 1 and 2 estates.
