Government Makes Changes to IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati's Security

The government has made changes to IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati's security team ahead of the October 17th presidential elections.

Mr Chebukati will enjoy round-the-clock security after the elite Flying Squad and Special Crimes Prevention Unit officers were attached to his security team.

Included in the security package are his wife and children whereby the detectives will patrol his Nairobi home.

The IEBC commissioners have also had their security beefed up as a joint team comprising staff from the OP, regular police, NIS and Administration Police has been set up to handle VIP security. Deputy Head of Operations Noor Gabow is reported to be leading the team.

The commissioners can deal with the police directly in regards to their security detail following the recent fall-out between the commissioners and the staff.

In the past, commissioners and staff were required to make their requests for security through CEO Ezra Chiloba or Chebukati.

On Saturday, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula had claimed that the IEBC Chairman's Security team had been withdrawn in unclear circumstances.

“It’s Mr Chebukati’s constitutional right to have security and it is not a privilege. I want to tell Jubilee administration that if anything happens to Mr Chebukati it will be held responsible,” the NASA Principal proclaimed.

Likewise, NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga, revealed that some of the IEBC commissioners had received death threats in addition to their security being withdrawn.

"A number of the IEBC commissioners are under serious threat by the government after their security has been withdrawn. Some of them are receiving very threatening mails to their lives," Raila disclosed.

However, the National Police Service dispelled NASA leader's claims stating that the Chebukati's security was intact.
