4 Tourists Arrested While Travelling to Join Al-Shabaab

Four Burundi tourists were arrested in Isiolo County while heading to Somalia to allegedly join the Al-Shabaab militia group.

Police apprehended the Burundi nationals at Merile area on Tuesday morning while they were travelling along Isiolo-Marsabit Highway.

They were stopped at a roadblock at about 4 am and it is upon being questioned that they confessed that they were heading to Somalia to join the terror group.

The four were identified as Ntakarutimana Benerd (41), Niyongere Yusuf (32), Nshimirimana Fulgnce Shadady (31) and Bizoza Abderauf (20).

A senior officer in Nairobi confirmed that the suspects had been taken into custody for further grilling.

On Monday, 24 people were hospitalized in various Mandera hospitals following an early morning attack in Bulla Hawa, Somalia.

Of the 24 Somali nationals, seven are officers of the Somali National Army (SNA) while the rest are civilians.

According to reports, a six-year-old boy was among the injured, having sustained gunshot wounds.

Bulla Hawa is a Somali town that borders Mandera with the two towns being separated only by a strip of shops.

The attack began at 5.45 am when a group of 200 Al Shabaab militants overran various security installations on the Somali side of the border, leaving Somali security officers scampering to safety on the Kenyan side.
