8 Kenyan Uber Drivers Arrested in Nairobi

Eight Uber drivers were arrested on Wednesday after they held demonstrations in Nairobi over terms of service provided by their employers.

The drivers under the Digital Taxi Association of Kenya were arraigned before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Thursday where they were charged with causing disturbance and resisting arrest.

They include: James Njoroge, Paul Mwolyo, Noah Wetindi, Mwangi Githae, Edwin Kaguo, Zachari Kaguo, Erick Maribi and Simon Macharia.

The court heard that they and others who were not in the court issued threats and shouted at motorists thus disrupting traffic flow.

They were also accused of blocking roads and damaging other vehicles.

Njoroge, Mwolyo and Wetindi faced another charge of resisting arrest by Central Police station OCS Alphonse Ngundo and his team.

The drivers denied the two charges and were released on Sh80,000 cash bail each. Magistrate Mutuku stated that the case will be mentioned on September 28.

On Monday, taxi drivers operating on online platforms in Nairobi announced that they would be on an indefinite strike. They accused their service providers of unfriendly policies.

The drivers issued a statement discontinuing their services indefinitely until certain terms are met.

Their complaints include the companies' decision to increase discounts and introduce free rides without consultation.

The drivers also demanded an immediate increase in the minimum charge and the firms to stop the onboarding of new drivers.
