The Trick NASA MPs Are Using to Avoid Losing Seats for Missing Parliament

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wa has revealed how National Super Alliance-allied lawmakers are getting around a rule that sees MPs lose their seats if they miss eight sittings without the speaker's authority.

In a sitting of Parliament today, Mr Ichung'wa disclosed that NASA MPs were coming to Parliament, signing the attendance register and leaving the building.

NASA lawmakers have promised to boycott all house business until after the fresh presidential election set for October 17th.

They reiterated that the 12th Parliament is illegally constituted as it was convened by a temporary President.

They gave President Uhuru's address to a joint sitting of Parliament on Tuesday a wide berth, as did the Chief Justice and other Judiciary representatives.

According to the NASA MPs, the annulment of President Kenyatta's win in the August 8th election denies him the constitutional mandate to take on such duties.

Parliamentarians hold four sittings in the plenary every week; one on Tuesday, two on Wednesday and one on Thursday.

According to Standing Order number 257(A), a member seeking to be absent from sitting of the House shall seek the written permission of the speaker in such a form as the speaker may determine, stating the period of absence, the reasons and any other relevant information.

The speaker is required to start the process of declaring a seat vacant once he gets information from the National Assembly clerk that a member could have missed eight sittings in a session.

NASA Co-Principal Moses Wetangula on Wednesday maintained that the coalition's elected leaders would keep away from Parliament in their quest for electoral justice.
