Kenyan School Closed After Students Burn Down Dormitory and Break Into Accounts' Office

A school in Elgeyo Marakwet has been shut down after students burnt a dormitory, destroyed their classes and stole cash.

The students reportedly broke into the accounts' offices and made away with an unknown amount of money.

This incident comes just a few weeks after a dormitory was set ablaze at Moi Girls' High School Nairobi leading to the death of 10 students.

After the incident, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i stated that investigations revealed it was arson and the key suspect was arraigned in court.

The parents said their daughter was being framed for the attack as she was an easy target and they maintained that it was their 14-year-old daughter who sounded the alarm when the fire broke out.

Cases of arson have been on the rise and experts have attributed most cases to retaliation by students over strict rules and oppressive administration.

Matiang'i has often asked schools to practice dialogue with students and engage with them to prevent riots and destruction of property.
