UK Issues New Demands To Police Service

The United Kingdom has warned Kenyan police against using excessive force on Kenyans.

In a statement issued on Saturday by UK Minister of State For Africa, Rory Stewart, security services were asked to use the utmost restraint in handling demonstrations.

Police were further advised to respond with proportionate and measured force. The Minister also asked for investigations into all allegations of abuse of force and police brutality.

With the repeat election on the horizon, the UK stated it is concerned with the increasingly unstable political situation in the country. They asked Kenya to conduct an open, peaceful and credible poll.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was also assured of continued support by the United Kingdom.

“We welcome steps the IEBC is taking to rectify flaws in the August election, as well as recent efforts by the IEBC and political parties to engage in dialogue,” the statement read in part.

The UK also condemned threats by the opposition to boycott the polls if their 'Irreducible Minimums' demands are not met.

Jubilee Party, on the other hand, has been warned about changing the electoral laws as the country is too close to an election.

The proposed amendments to electoral laws Jubilee wants to make include the creation of a manual transmission system whose results are considered final.

Both parties have been asked to work with the IEBC cooperatively and in the spirit of dialogue as it sets out arrangements for the new election.
