IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati Issues Last Warning to NASA and Jubilee

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has issued a stern warning to the Jubilee Party and National Super Alliance (NASA) asking them to refrain from threatening his staff.

Speaking during a press briefing at Bomas of Kenya, he asked politicians to uphold the rule of law and stop intimidating IEBC commissioners, who are in the process of preparing for a repeat election after the Supreme Court nullified the August 8 presidential poll.

“I will not allow anyone to destroy this country as long as I am a referee in this election,” Mr Chebukati stated.

“I will not tolerate the threats on my staff anymore, I will not tolerate the interference in the commission anymore. Kenyans are paying a lot of money for this election and as their custodian, I will not let the money of the Kenyan people or the development partners go to waste,” he declared.

Chebukati dismissed allegations that he was planning to step down from the commission, stating that he was aware some people would be happy to see him do so.

“I know there are many elements who would love nothing more than to hear me announce my resignation at this point. In reality that will be the easier thing to do, but we all have to put Kenya first and that is why I am determined to make this commission work,” Chebukati affirmed.

Mr Chebukati also hit out at the main presidential candidates for frustrating his attempts to create a consensus ahead of the repeat presidential poll on October 26.

Mr Chebukati was addressing members of the fourth estate, hours after the resignation of IEBC commissioner, Roselyn Akombe.

Ms Akombe, who resigned after leaving the country for the US, accused the electoral board of being partisan claiming that it will not manage to hold a credible poll set for October 26.

She further divulged that she feared for her life, citing threats to her and commission staff.

Her allegations come before the dust settles on the death IT manager Chris Msando who was found murdered, with signs of torture on his body, nine days before the August election.

The repeat presidential poll will be held on October 26 as scheduled, although Chebukati admitted that he could not guarantee to deliver a credible poll.
