Majority Leader Aden Duale Admits August Election Was Flawed

Majority Leader Aden Duale has admitted that the August 8th election was not entirely credible, specifically singling out the transmission of the results.

The letter published in The Standard newspaper, however, defends the mistakes by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), with Duale stating that the commission is led by humans and they are to err.

“There may have been mistakes here and there in the process of transmitting results. The electoral commission is not infallible. Human is to error. Also, the electoral gadgets, however advanced they are, can experience hitches. Such shortcomings are not an exception to us,” the letter read in part.

Mr Duale further defended the commission stating that developed countries are also faced with the same challenges in elections.

He added that when such disputes arise questioning the authenticity of the results, the solution should be to scrutinize the ballot papers to ascertain whether or not spoilt votes and mistakes made by the electoral team are significant enough to alter the final results.

He faulted the Supreme Court arguing that they did not put into place law of natural justice before they reached the decision to annul the August 8 presidential poll.

The leader of majority accused the Court of giving Raila Odinga a political lifeline which he is tenuously clinging onto for political survival. 

Mr Duale also claimed that Mr Odinga misuses jobless youths by bringing them to the streets to protest for as long as he wants.

“The curtains look like they are finally falling on Raila Amolo Odinga’s political career. By boycotting the elections, he is simply saying he has thrown in the towel. There were really limited options after the August 8 General Election,” the letter stated.

The Garissa Township MP alleged that Jubilee won the August poll and accused the opposition of attempting to alter democracy in the country. Mr Duale argued that it does not make sense for NASA to claim a victory of any nature.
