Wednesday Declared Public Holiday

The Ministry of Interior has declared Wednesday October 25 a public holiday.

According to a gazette notice published on Tuesday, acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i declared that this would facilitate Kenyans to participate in the presidential election.

"Wednesday the 25th of October 2017 is a public holiday to accord Kenyans an opportunity to participate in the Fresh Presidential Elections," the notice read in part.

Following the new announcement, the country will now have two holidays in a row.

Dr Matiang'i had on Friday declared October 26 a national holiday in a gazette notice published on October 19.

When contacted by Kenyans.co.ke, the Ministry of Interior could not confirm the report as officials claimed they were unaware of the changes.

"We are not aware of such a thing, only Thursday has been declared a holiday," an official at the Ministry conveyed.

However, the Ministry's spokesman Mwenda Njoka confirmed the report revealing that the decision was arrived at after consultations.

"This will enable Kenyans the opportunity to travel to their respective voting centres so as to participate in the fresh presidential election on Thursday, 26th October 2017 ," Njoka explained.

Chief of Staff Joseph Kinyua had not been sufficiently informed when Kenyans.co.ke contacted him but he gave an assurance that the official statement would be made available to the press on Tuesday afternoon.

The new holiday has now coincided with the date given by National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga for a major announcement.

"On October 25th I will address Kenyans to tell them what to do. I have looked ahead and I know where I am taking this ship," Mr Odinga declared last week.
