1 Police Officer Killed, Others Injured Transporting Election Materials

One police officer has been killed and three others injured after the vehicle they were travelling in rolled at Abdisamit in Garissa County.

The officers were on their way to Balambala from Garissa town to provide security in the repeat presidential election.

According to Garissa OCPD Aron Moriase, the officers were also escorting presidential election materials when the accident occurred.

Moriase stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle before it rolled several times. 

The Police boss stated that the injured officers were taken to the Garissa Referral Hospital.

Elsewhere, a bus ferrying voting materials was swept away by floods in Kitui

Reports indicate that voting materials were destroyed in the Thursday morning incident.

The repeat poll kicked off in a majority of the polling stations with hundreds of police officers deployed to provide security.

Security chiefs in Nyanza on Wednesday declared that they would not allow anyone to disrupt the presidential rerun though residents maintained they would not participate in the process.

Nyanza Regional Commissioner Wilson Njega vowed to deal with those "plotting chaos before, during and after the exercise.
