Chebukati Postpones Election in 4 Counties

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Thursday postponed elections in Homa Bay, Kisumu, Migori and Siaya to Saturday the 28th of October 2017.

Chebukati announced that the election had been postponed because the areas were faced with security challenges.

He, however, explained that the commission had raised its concerns with the Inspector General of Police and was waiting for feedback.

Regarding areas where the election was disrupted due to bad weather; Mr Chebukati explained that the situation had been sorted and voting was currently ongoing adding that more time will be allocated to these stations.

Addressing the issue of the voter turnout, the IEBC boss stated that the scheduled was being prepared and would be released at a later briefing.

The Chair, however, mentioned that most polling stations opened on time across the country and the exercise moved on smoothly.

The move to postpone the poll comes after a section of Opposition supporters in the four counties blocked polling stations and engaged the police in running battles.

In Kisumu, one person was reported dead and several others injured after a section of Opposition supporters clashed with police officers.

Migori County had one person shot and injured by the anti-riot police following attempts to block polling stations. The victim was taken to Migori Hospital for treatment.
