IEBC Cancels Saturday's Presidential Election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cancelled Saturday's presidential election in Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori and Kisumu counties as well as in two more constituencies; Fafi and Turkana Central.

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati announced at a press briefing at the Bomas of Kenya on Friday that the election had been postponed to a later date.

He revealed that some election officials in the counties had sought refuge in police stations while others had been seriously threatened.

The election in the four counties had first been postponed on Thursday after it failed to take off due to security concerns.

Mr Chebukati indicated at the time that he had written to the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, to seek further direction.

Area residents in the four counties have maintained that no election will take place.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) today urged it's supporters to stay at home on Saturday.

Led by former Premier Raila Odinga, they alleged that the postponement of the polls in the four counties was due to ethnic profiling by the state.

They called on NASA supporters to stay at home on Saturday, as they accused the Government of looking for an excuse to unleash police brutality and extra-judicial killings on area residents.
