Chebukati Explains Controversial Tweet On Voter Turn-Out

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has spoken out on a tweet he sent out on Thursday indicating that 6.5 million people voted in the repeat presidential election.

The figure had been questioned as forms released by the electoral body indicate that the final tally could be well over 7 million.

At a briefing on Saturday, Mr Chebukati stated that the tweet considered the forms he had been able to verify at the time, noting that a team at the commission was working to establish the final figures.

He stated: "We were receiving the forms as they were coming in...The team is still working on the exact figures."

Chebukati divulged that they had received 37,161 Forms 34A with 3, 722 yet to be transmitted via the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS).

17,568 kits had transmitted data at the time of the tweet, according to the chairperson.

The IEBC had previously announced that KIEMS would automatically generate voter turn-out data, raising more questions on the inconclusive IEBC figures.

At a press conference in Mombasa today, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala called for the IEBC declare Uhuru Kenyatta as president-elect, noting that he knew President Uhuru had garnered 7.5 Million votes.

"We know Uhuru got 7.5 Million votes...we want the IEBC to declare Uhuru as President," Balala stated.

The electoral body also cautioned the public against falling for unconfirmed results being shared on social media and by some media houses.
