IEBC to Make Major Announcement on Presidential Election Today

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Saturday stated that it will make an announcement on Sunday regarding the way forward on areas where election failed to take place.

IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati while addressing the country from Bomas of Kenya stated that the commission was discussing the matter and will give a report on Sunday.

"We postponed the election in 25 constituencies because our staff and materials have not reached the final destination. As a commission, we have the entire infrastructure ready but we can’t do it alone. It involves security; we cannot put the lives of our staff at risk.

"We shall give a comprehensive reply tomorrow based on the Constitution and laws of the land,” Chebukati was quoted by Nation.

The IEBC Chair made the announcement on Saturday after the election in 4 counties; Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay and Kisumu had been postponed twice.

The IEBC on Thursday postponed the election in the 4 counties to Saturday but was again forced to postpone it after the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church Leadership and a section of politicians noted that the new date was infringing on the right to worship.

During the Saturday briefing, Chebukati also clarified that the voter turn out was well over 7 Million and not 6.5 Million as earlier announced.

According to the Commission Chair, the electoral agency was working with the numbers as they came and that's why there were changes in the total voter turn out tally.

"We were receiving the forms as they were coming in...The team is still working on the exact figures," he stated.
