DP Ruto Advises Raila What to Do After Uhuru is Declared Winner

Deputy President William Ruto on Monday advised Opposition leader Raila Odinga and all other parties aggrieved with the repeat presidential election results and the process to move to court.

Speaking during an interview with SABC News, DP Ruto noted that the Constitution provides Kenyans with the right to petition an election if they feel unsatisfied with the results.

"We are a democracy after the winner is announced Kenyans are free to prosecute issues in court," he stated.

Addressing the issue of legitimacy, DP Ruto explained that they had been elected by a majority of Kenyans and as such, they were properly and lawfully chosen.

"We got 90% of the votes cast surpassing the constitutional threshold of 50% + 1. In a democracy, the Supreme will of the people confers legitimacy," he stated.

Regarding calls for a repeat election in 90 days, the Deputy President noted that there will be no election being held in Kenya until 2022 General Election.

"I think  Raila Odinga is fatigued or confused, there will be no election in 90 days. Kindly remind Raila Odinga that the next election will be held in 1,750 days, on 9th August 2022," Ruto stated.

Mr Odinga has been on the record dismissing President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP Ruto's re-election on grounds that the repeat election was a sham.

Speaking last week during an interview with CNN, Mr Odinga announced that President Kenyatta "will not find it easy" adding that they will put pressure on the government to step down.

"As you know, our Constitution allows for picketing, for striking, for peaceful processions, for protesting and so on, and for boycott. So, we have several other means which are legal and constitutional at our disposal, which we will bring into play to put pressure on this government,” he stated.
