Waiguru Caught Up in Sh52 Million Scandal

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has been accused of embezzling part of Sh52 Million that had been raised to facilitate presidential campaigns ahead of the October 26 repeat poll.

The campaign money is said to have been raised by various professionals from the county through an initiative by Governor Waiguru.

However, some of the contributors have raised concerns over what they claim to be lack of transparency and suspicious dealings by the County boss.

"We want to be told where much of the cash went because only 10 vehicles were branded and few campaign roadshows conducted. This is a scandal," Mr Peter Kariuki from Mwea was quoted by the Nation.

One of the chief campaigners, Mr Ephraim Warui added: "I was involved in the campaigns and I doubt all the money was used for the intended purpose."

They further claim that there were very few low-key campaigns witnessed in the county which do not justify the expenditure.

Kirinyaga County Assembly Majority Leader Murango Kamau has admitted that he was one of the signatories to the account where the money was held.

Without disclosing names, he added that the account had three other signatories - a fellow MCA, a Member of Parliament (MP) and a senior Jubilee official from the Party headquarters.

He additionally stated that he could only account for Sh11 Million that he asserts was the full amount that was deposited in the holding account.

"I only know of Sh11 Million and I can account for it. I think the difference (Sh41 Million) was a pledge by MCAs, MPs and professionals," Mr Kamau explained.

The Majority Leader dismissed the accusations against Governor Waiguru stating that they are sentiments expressed by MPs who had full knowledge of how the money was utilised in campaigning for President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"Some of these MPs are now undermining the county government and behaving like saints and they are not," he dismissed.
