IEBC Declares By-Election Winner

Richard Onyonka of Ford-Kenya has been declared the winner in the Kitutu Chache South By-Election that took place on Tuesday.

Onyonka garnered 10,122 votes while his closest challenger, Jubilee Party's Anthony Kibagendi managed 5,074 votes.

Mr Onyonka received his certificate from election officials led by Returning Officer (RO) Hilda Imbo.

Voter turn-out was low for a constituency of 59,000 registered voters.

Onyonka will now serve his third term in Parliament, which he has also promised will be his last.

Andrew Maubi (Wiper), Samwel Omwando (ODM), Jimmy Onkangi (PDP), Morara Nyang'au (Kanu) and Justus Mochoge (ANC) were the other candidates in the race.

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga had, however, endorsed Ford-K's Onyonka.

This caused some disquiet in his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) camp.

Polling went on smoothly in most of the 115 polling stations in the counstituency.

There was, however, a serious delay at Daraja Mbili Primary School Polling Station where the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits failed to work for hours.
