New Development in Death of Governor Wahome Gakuru

The late Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru will be buried on Saturday, November 18 at his home in Kirichu, Nyeri County.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, Nyeri Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga stated that they had proposed that date to ensure Gakuru’s son who is sitting for his KCSE will be available.

The Deputy Governor further announced that a requiem mass for the deceased will be held next week in Nairobi.

Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru noted that Gakuru will be accorded a state burial.

Mucheru will lead a national committee for Gakuru's burial arrangements assisted by a representative from the Council of Governors, while Mr Kahiga and Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu will head the county committee.

"Three committees have been formed to make his burial arrangements as the burial is being organised by the three committees at national, county and family level," Kahiga stated.

“The three teams will work together towards ensuring that our departed brother has a honourable burial,” he added.

Mr Gakuru died in a grisly road accident on Tuesday morning after his car rammed into a barrier along Thika road at Makenji, Muranga County.

Police officers stated that a tyre burst caused the car to lose control, veer off the road and ram into the guardrail which tore into the vehicle.

An eyewitness, David Ngengi, however, gave a contrasting account stating that the recklessness of a bodaboda rider caused Dr Gakuru’s driver to veer off the road.

Earlier this year, another Nyeri Governor, Nderitu Gachagua, passed on while receiving treatment at a London Hospital.
