President Uhuru Kenyatta Gives Polycarp Igathe New Position

President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed the Nairobi County Deputy Governor, Mr Polycarp Igathe, as Co-chairperson of a special technical team in Nairobi alongside Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, Mr Igathe will spearhead the team that will implement a new project dubbed the Nairobi Regeneration project.

"The programme will be between the national government and the County Government of Nairobi and will cost billions of shillings.

"It focuses on key economic and social sectors and is expected to significantly improve the livelihoods of Nairobi residents," the President's statement read in part.

The meeting that was chaired by President Kenyatta also resolved to have various departments of the Nairobi County administration make major changes to their expenditure budget.

"In the next four weeks, all relevant state departments and city-county departments should realign their procurement plans to ensure relevant allocations are available for the implementation of the programme," the statement directed.

The meeting was also attended by Cabinet Secretaries Henry Rotich (Treasury), James Macharia (Transport and Infrastructure), Eugene Wamalwa (Water and Irrigation), Cleopa Mailu (Health) and Jacob Kaimenyi (Lands) among others.

"The programme focuses on Housing and Settlement, Infrastructure and Transport, Energy, Water Resources, Environment and Solid Waste, Youth, Women and Persons with Disability," the brief stated outlined.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Sunday announced plans to have hawkers moved out of the CBD to land allocated for them in Ngara.

"I will meet with the hawkers from November 13 in a bid to oversee a smooth relocation of the traders to Ngara area.

"I have realized that instead of inspectors controlling hawkers from coming to the CBD they instruct the county askaris to allow them into the CBD at a fee. The bribe from hawkers is shared from junior askaris to the top command at the City Inspectorate," the Governor explained.
