MPs Propose New Law Targeting Social Media Users

Members of Parliament led by Matungulu legislator Stephen Mule and Sammy Seroney (Nominated) have requested the National Assembly to come up with laws that will control how Kenyans use social media.

Speaking in Parliament during House proceedings on Wednesday, Mule, a Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) MP, strongly criticised the manner in which Kenyans use social media.

He further argued that Kenyans had developed a tendency to use the platforms to spread malicious, false and hurtful information about others.

They took issue with how rumors about the late Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru were spread all over the internet moments after his death.

“We as members need to come up with laws that will deal with how people use social media, as an MP, even before you know your fate, you are already condemned to death by the social media,” Mule stated.

Mr Seroney stated: “I know it is within the powers of this house, without fear or favor, to deal with such issues within the law.”

“I want to urge the public to please refrain from misusing social media to harm other families. Governor Wahome has a family,” he added.

The Nominated MP further lamented how social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter had been turned into a room for speculation and peddling of hatred.

“We need to look into this issue of social media as a house. I got shocked when I read some funny things about the late Governor,” Mr Seroney ascertained.

"If we don’t get a way of putting our speed governor on this social media it will destroy this country, it will destroy all of us,” he concluded.
