NASA Asks Supreme Court To Take Action On President Uhuru

The National Super Alliance (NASA) has responded to a Presidential petition filed at the Supreme Court, accusing President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of engaging in electoral malpractices.

In a sworn affidavit filed on Sunday by Amani National Congress (ANC) Party leader Musalia Mudavadi, NASA argues that the two severally contravened electoral laws.

The affidavit was filed as a response to the petition filed by human rights activists Njonjo Mue and Khelef Khalif challenging the validity of the October 26 repeat election.

In the affidavit, NASA outlines their reasons for withdrawing from the race, pointing an accusing finger at the electoral body and President Kenyatta.

One of the reasons, NASA states, is a failure by the electoral body to hold its staff accountable and implement the reforms they had requested.

They also cited 'an evaluation of the atmosphere of violence and intimidation that had been created by the 3rd respondent (Uhuru).'

Mudavadi's affidavit further notes that President Uhuru made various verbal attacks undermining the judiciary.

"Prior to issuing threats against the judiciary, he had unleashed a reign of terror against members and supporters of NASA," Mudavadi states.

NASA also accuses the President of wooing leaders including former Governor Moses Akaranga, Alfred Khangati, Isaac Ruto, David Nkedianye and Peter Munya with jobs and money.

The petition reads in part: "The statements made by Uhuru at a Rally in Meru where he intimated that he had obtained the support of one Munya by an agreement to offer him a job in his government as a reward for changing his allegiance from NASA."

Among other issues raised in NASA's response are police brutality on NASA supporters and the engagement of lawyer Evans Monari by the IEBC when he has previously represented President Kenyatta.

They also hit out at foreign envoys Nic Hailey (UK) and Bob Godec (USA), whom they say 'have on many occasions acted as Uhuru's Public Relations Officers'.
