JKUAT Shut Down Indefinitely

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has been shut down indefinitely.

According to a source who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke on condition of anonymity, the students went on strike due to a number of issues that the management had continuously brushed aside.

Some of the reasons cited included poor living conditions in the hostels, poor Wi-Fi connectivity and other administration issues.

The circular directed all students residing in the main campus to vacate the premises by 2:30 pm on Wednesday.

The memo also noted that all activities at the campus had been suspended until further notice.

The University is set to hold a graduation ceremony this Friday and it remains to be seen how the exercise will be undertaken.

Lecturers, on the other hand, have vowed to stay out of lecture rooms until the government implements a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) it signed with the university instructors.

The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) launched a countrywide lecturers strike for all public universities on November 1 over the failure of government to implement the 2013-2017 CBA.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wesonga on Tuesday reiterated that lecturers will not step into classrooms until their grievances are addressed.

“We will strike forever as long as the CBA is not implemented,” he stated while addressing the press at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu.

“The government has violated the 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement and as a union we will not take this kindly.”
