Nairobi Matatus to Reduce Bus Fares

A number of matatu operators in the city are seeking to reduce fares because of the political situation in the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Association of Matatu Operators explained that the current political situation in the country was impacting negatively in the economy and as such, fares should be reduced until the normal conditions are restored.

“Since the formation of our organisation, business has been low due to the political atmosphere in the country, which has led to the decline in business. We are urging our members to reduce fares for our customers during this difficult time,” the Chairman of the Association, Jimal Ibrahim, was quoted by the Standard.

If the move by the association bares fruit, city residents, mostly those plying the Eastlands route, will benefit from reduced fares.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a Matatu Culture Representative, however, noted that as an organization in the transport business, they did not share the same view.

According to the representative, fares can only be reduced when there are many people traveling.

"It is impossible to reduce the fares now because we will incur more loses whereas the owners of the matatus want their cash to sort out their loans.

"In my opinion, fares can only reduce when there are many people and not when there are few people," he stated.

Mr Ibrahim, however, took issue with the recent increase in fuel prices by the Energy Regulatory Commission stating that for Kenyans to enjoy low fares, the cost of fuel should be reviewed downwards.

“The Government should regulate fuel prices as this will enable us to pass the benefit to our customers,” he submitted.
