How Governor Spent Sh56 Million on Circumcision

Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has been put on the spot over the use of Sh56 Million on male circumcision and rehabilitation of alcoholics and drug addicts.

Auditor General Edward Ouko revealed that the county government spent the money without producing supporting documents including signed lists of beneficiaries.

"It is not explained why the county government used public funds on the rite of passage, which is usually carried out by the families involved," Mr Ouko stated.

In the latest report released by the Auditor General, the Mwangi Wa Iria-led government spent Sh17 Million on allowances under the addict's rehabilitation programme.

The government also spent Sh8.9 Million on food and allowances for the alcoholics.

The county also allegedly paid two consultants Sh6.9 Million to perform a survey on alcohol and drug abuse.

The hired consultants were purported to write a report on male circumcision in the region.

The devolved unit further paid Sh2.7 Million to a United States NGO as the shipping cost for drugs and medical equipment worth Sh45 Million that the organization had purportedly donated.

"The drugs had not been delivered at the county at the time of this audit, and there was no indication that the drugs and equipment had been dispatched from USA," he noted.
