Fresh Protests Erupt Day After Raila's Return From US

Fresh demos were on Saturday witnessed at Nairobi's City Stadium roundabout after businesspeople and matatu owners came out to protest the destruction of their property.

The protesters particularly decried the torching of a Forward Travellers Sacco mini-bus, allegedly by angry National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters.

The protests paralysed traffic from Jogoo Road for hours as traffic police advised motorists to use alternative routes.

The incident was one among many reported as the former Prime Minister led a procession into the city centre.

Confrontations between the NASA supporters and the police turned violent as tear gas was lobbed in an effort to contain the crowd.

According to Deputy Inspector General George Kinoti, five people also lost their lives during the skirmishes after being stoned.

"We are aware that sections of the mob accompanying the Nasa convoy looted property and five persons were killed by stoning in different incidents after having been caught stealing by enraged crowds.

"Two were stoned along Landhies Road, two next to Country Bus station and one along Racecourse Road," the police statement read in part.

NASA leader Johnstone Muthama, however, stated that a total of eight had been shot dead by the police, four of them having been killed while trying to set ablaze a police water cannon.
