Gov Nyong'o Bans Demos in Kisumu

Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong'o has banned demonstrations which have led to destruction of property in the lakeside city.

In an address to the press on Thursday, Nyong'o stated that a group of young people was taking advantage of the chaos to loot property, rob residents and block roads.

He added that only protests officially called by the National Super Alliance (NASA) would be given a go-ahead and communication will only be adhered to if it comes from the coalition's powers that be.

Raila Odinga has made it very clear that demonstrations will only be held in Nairobi after meeting NASA governors and I was there.

“Who are these people making decisions without the party – ODM – directing them yet we have party leadership led by myself in this county?” he asked.

He condemned the criminal acts witnessed in recent weeks adding that they were criminal and urged the police to deal with anyone who was breaking the law.

“Somebody decides they’re going to block roads, take money from women and rob our visitors. These are criminal acts!

“Demonstrations must be peaceful and not violent and therefore we’ve told the police to deal with anybody putting stones on the road.

"Anybody molesting a dweller residing in Kisumu will be treated as a criminal,” Governor Nyong’o warned.

Earlier this week after the Supreme Court upheld President Uhuru Kenyatta's victory in the recently concluded fresh election, there were chaos in Kondele and a car was torched by the roadside as youth engaged police in running battles.
