EU's New Statement on Supreme Court Ruling

The Supreme Court on Monday, November 2, upheld President Uhuru Kenyatta's win in the fresh Presidential election and the European Union has released a statement on the same.

The EU stated that the ruling was a significant stride in Kenya's democracy and marked an end to a 'divisive electoral process.'

"The ruling ended a long and divisive electoral process.

"It is time for Kenyans to overcome the divisions and pool efforts to take the country forward," read part of the statement.

The Union further asked both sides of the political divide to work together and engage in fruitful debate for the betterment of the nation.

"We expect all political forces to engage in genuine and meaningful discussions, including on urgent electoral reforms.

"The respect for institutions, the separation of powers and respect for fundamental rights are essential in this process," stated the EU.

It condemned the electoral violence, asking leaders to avoid fueling chaos and tension but instead, accept the Court Ruling.

"The recent increase in electoral violence is unacceptable. It is essential for all political forces to refrain from inciting violence and to accept the results of the Court ruling and of the elections.

"Security forces should exercise maximum restraint and a proportional use of force.

"The EU stands with all Kenyans who support and reaffirm Kenyan democracy and is committed to continued cooperation with President Kenyatta and his government," read the statement.
