Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Rejects Anyang' Nyong'o's Plan, Demands Apology

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has rejected the plan by Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o to hold all Opposition protests in the capital city.

Governor Nyong'o on Thursday imposed a ban on demos in Kisumu declaring that NASA supporters who wished to engage in protests should travel to Nairobi and join demos there.

In a statement released on Friday, Governor Sonko expressed concern that his Kisumu counterpart could make such an announcement.

"I have noted with extreme shock and disbelief a statement attributed to Kisumu Governor H.E. Anyang' Nyong'o banning all demonstrations in Kisumu county and declaring that all future demos shall be held in Nairobi.

"I wish to warn my colleague that Nairobi City County will never entertain goons and criminals who take advantage of the situation to harass, intimidate, molest, rape, loot and destroy properties belonging to innocent Kenyans," the statement read in part.

The Nairobi Governor went on to demand an apology from the Kisumu leader noting that he had offended residents of Nairobi with the statement.

"Governor Nyong'o, be warned that Nairobi City County is not ready to engage in hooliganism but in nation-building.

"You owe the people of Nairobi an apology," Governor Sonko stated.

Governor Nyong'o banned the protests citing that some young people were using the demos as a cover for their criminal acts.

"Raila Odinga has made it very clear that demonstrations will only be held in Nairobi after meeting NASA governors and I was there.

"Who are these people making decisions without the party – ODM – directing them yet we have party leadership led by myself in this county?" Prof. Nyong'o declared.
