NASA's Warning to Police Ahead of Tuesday Rally

The National Super Alliance (NASA) on Sunday warned the police against interfering with its Tuesday rally at Jacaranda grounds in Nairobi.

The coalition noted that if anything happens to any of the leaders or their supporters, the police should be held liable.

Kenyans.co.ke learned that the Opposition coalition on Saturday wrote to Embakassi police head notifying the agency of their planned rally.

In the letter written by Sifuna and Associates, the police were informed that the coalition was organising for a memorial service to be held on Tuesday.

“Our clients shall hold a memorial on November 28 for the innocent Kenyans who met their untimely deaths at the hands of the police and regime-sponsored killer gangs in the past few weeks,” the letter read in part.

The police, through Nairobi County Commandant Japtheth Koome, however, stated that there would be no other meeting in the city apart from President Uhuru Kenyatta's inauguration.

"The only meeting that I know will be held on Tuesday is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s swearing-in at the Kasarani sports complex," Koome was quoted by the Nation.

The Opposition insisted that the Police had no legal right to ban its meeting adding that the requirement was only a notification which had already been issued.

According to NASA, the meeting will go on as scheduled and the police should not intimidate them.

"To the Police, once we notify you of our planned prayers for the victims of Police brutality, your duty is to secure the event. On 28th Nov, we shall be at Jacaranda grounds and we expect no more or less from you.

"That's the letter and spirit of our Constitution," Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi stated.
