President William Ruto has issued a plea to Kenyans attending the football match between Kenya and Zambia at Kasarani on August 17, urging them to respect the rules and regulations of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, on August 15, when he met with leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties, Ruto assured Kenyans that the national team has prepared well and can win the match.

"On Sunday, we have a match between Kenya and Zambia at Kasarani. I ask Kenyans, let's not cause distractions. Let's ensure we follow the procedures and the CAF rules."

"But I also want to ask all of you, Kenyans, when you go to the match, let's make sure that we follow the CAF rules. This is important so that we can continue our football game in a fair and safe way. Let's make sure we build our nation's reputation as a nation that knows how to play football fairly and with respect," he said

He encouraged those with tickets to be orderly at Kasarani Stadium and announced that alternative viewing spots with large screens would be set up in other parts of the city for those without tickets.

Ruto said that this measure is intended to prevent overcrowding at the stadium and to ensure the country does not face sanctions from CAF.

He also praised the fans for their immense support but emphasised the need for everyone to show restraint and operate within the rules to protect the national team's opportunities.

“I want to tell all fans, including the people of Kenya, that you have done a tremendous job, supporting and cheering Harambee Stars. But we have to do this within the parameters of what is allowed by CAF and therefore I'm urging everyone to be restrained.”

“Those who can make it to Kasarani because they have tickets must also be orderly, and those who cannot make it to Kasarani. We are going to make it possible from other parts of the city so that we do not spoil the chances for Harambee Stars and our country,” he added.

To fans who are unable to get tickets, a chance to watch the game physically, the government set up six official fan zones in Nairobi.

These zones, which will have big screens and police security to ensure safety, will allow fans to watch the match between Harambee Stars and Zambia.

The game is scheduled to be played at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, at 3 pm EAT.

The six official fan zones are:

  • Uhuru Park
  • Lucky Summer (Ngomongo Area, behind Kasarani Stadium)
  • Dandora Stadium
  • Utalii (Stima Club)
  • Jacaranda Grounds
  • Kibera DC Grounds
