Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang'i has defended former president Uhuru Kenyatta over the management of the Azimio election agents in 2022, urging the ODM politicians to focus on more important issues.
Speaking during a press briefing on January 6, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary addressed the ongoing discussion on the alleged mismanagement of the campaign funds where agents were allegedly never paid.
Matiang'i says that the ODM brigade is focusing on petty things like the agent payment instead of holding the government accountable on other important matters.
“Instead of focusing on important issues you are trivially focusing on petty things about which agent was paid and not paid,” Matiang'i roared.
The Jubilee deputy claims that leaders who are bringing up the agent payment issues are pro-government and are on a mission to soil the reputation of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Matiang'i has further called upon those asking questions on the payment of the Azimio agents to ask the person who hired the agents.
“Concerns about agents who were paid or not paid and so on, they should address who hired them; why should it be a national issue?” Matiang'i claimed.
His defence of Uhuru Kenyatta over the Azimio agent saga was supported by the Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, who claimed the former president was not in charge of handling agents.
Kioni says that Uhuru was fundraising resources for the party, pinning the blame on the ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna over the mismanagement of the campaign resources.
“If he (the SG) had managed the resources well, Raila would be in State House alive,” Kioni claimed.
The ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna raised the agent payment questions when he accused National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed of squandering the money meant to pay agents.
Junet Mohamed responded to the allegations, shifting the blame to former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his close allies.
