US Gives 3 Instructions to Raila Ahead of Swearing-in

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga met foreign diplomats, business leaders and religious heads on Friday in a bid to come up with a lasting solution to the political tension in the country.

US Ambassador Robert Godec was in attendance and urged the opposition leader to soften his stance and engage in dialogue with government.

His sentiments were echoed by UK Ambassador Nic Hailey who was also in attendance.

The envoys further added that the talks would help to address underlying issues and would go a long way in strengthening institutions in the country.

"Religious and business leaders & diplomats met NASA leaders today (Friday).

"Urge government, opposition & all Kenyans to engage in open, transparent national conversation to address underlying issues & strengthen institutions to help Kenya.

"Stressed need to uphold Constitution," wrote the envoys on their Twitter handles.

The meeting comes just a few days ahead of Odinga's swearing-in which is set to take place on December 12 as the country celebrates Jamhuri Day.

On Thursday, Attorney General Githu Muigai stated that any attempt to swear-in the NASA leader as President, outside the confines of the Constitution, would qualify as high treason.

Muigai based his argument on the fact that Odinga was not declared winner of the election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Chief Justice would not be present at his swearing-in.
