Maraga's Daughter Reveals Interesting Facts About Him

Emma Maraga, Chief Justice David Maraga's daughter, gave a speech at Strathmore University last week when her father was presented with the CB Madan Award.

Maraga was presented with the award in recognition of how he handled the two Presidential petitions that were brought before the Supreme Court.

After making the decision to nullify the results of the August 8 poll, Kenya's Supreme Court became the first court in Africa to nullify a Presidential election.

Emma's speech revealed a side of her father that many Kenyans do not know about .

Among other things, Emma described her father as generous, humble and nurturing.

She told the audience how her grandfather died when Maraga was still a young boy but, before his death, advised him to sell goats so that he can get an education.

Due to financial challenges, Maraga began his schooling in Standard Three. He was brought up only by his mother who ensured he made it to university

Emma further stated that Maraga was always there for his children.

She revealed how Maraga would make 14-hour bus trips to Kampala to see her sister who was studying Dentistry at Makerere University. This was in spite of his stature and a back problem that he had.

At home, Maraga enjoys eating Ugali and Chinsaga (Traditional greens).

Emma also divulged that Maraga supports numerous relatives, disadvantaged children and orphans, and at times had to negotiate with his own children's schools because he could not pay fees on time.

Finally, Emma stated that her father's secret to success was his immovable belief in God.
