17 people were killed on Sunday evening in a grisly road accident along the Thika-Garissa highway near Kilimambogo.
The accident took place at around 8.30pm and involved a 14-seater matatu and a lorry.
According to police, the Kitui-bound matatu was trying to avoid hitting a bodaboda rider when it collided head-on with the lorry.

Thika Traffic Base Commander Michael Lemaiyan confirmed that 13 people died on the spot while 4 people later succumbed to their injuries.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to General Kago Funeral Home in Thika.
Elsewhere, 7 people died on Saturday night after another accident along the busy Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
The accident occurred at Makutano area after a matatu and lorry collided.
Last week, 25 people died following a horrific road accident at Sachangwan area along the same highway.
The accident involved a fleet of vehicles with a bus belonging to Modern Coast company heading to Kampala from Nairobi being ripped off on one side.
On Friday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) stated that over 150 people were killed in the past two weeks through road accidents.
A joint statement by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA), the National Police Service and NTSA revealed that majority of the accidents were caused by speeding, overlapping, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Several blackspots were also identified including; Salgaa, Sachangwan, Migaa and Soysambu in Nakuru County, Bonje area in Kilifi County, Manyani in Taita Taveta, Lukenya and Maanzoni in Machakos County, Salama and Konza in Makueni, Ntulele in Narok and Sagana area in Murang'a.
