Daystar University Vice-Chancellor Replaced After Students Protest

Professor James Kombo has taken over as Vice-Chancellor of Daystar University in an acting capacity, replacing Timothy Wachira, who has gone on a sabbatical leave.

This comes after students launched a boycott of classes that saw the institution closed twice within the span of two months.

The students were protesting what they termed as the deteriorating state of facilities, lack of resources and an incompetent administration.

Following the launch of the boycott in early November, Daystar Student leaders accused the administration of threatening them and ethnic profiling.

Daystar Valley Road President Alloys Otieno and Athi River President Karwitha Karimi held a joint briefing, where they blasted the Parents Association Chair Dorothy Ng'ethe for allegedly profiling them and working with the Vice-Chancellor to quell the protest by threatening them.

Ms Karimi stated: "Dorothy Ng'ethe, the Daystar University Parents Association Chairperson, called me asking me to remember that my name is Karwitha and my fellow President's name is Otieno, and I should remember that 'his people' are causing the Government a lot of harm and a lot of disservice.

"And I should remember that I need to save myself and my education and write an e-mail immediately to the VC calling off the boycott failure to which we would be dealt with accordingly and I should not be dealt 'with his people'," she went on.

Prof Wachira had stated that the students were unwilling to engage in consultations to find a solution to the issues they were raising.

Following the November 17 closure of the institution, the student government was also suspended by the University Senate.

The students had also accused anti-riot police, who were sent in to ensure the protests did not get out of hand, of using extreme force.
